Who Else Wants To Learn Blog Commenting The Right Way?

You consider blog commenting as the easiest way for driving quality traffic, right? But… I have seen many bloggers commenting just “Thanks” and “Nice Post“. Do you think that these type of comments will drive you good traffic?

Absolutely Not!

These type of comments are considered as spam nowadays. These comments prove that you are just commenting for a backlink.

Today, I am going to write about how to do blog commenting, the right way.

It’s not that you need to deliver long long comments to get quality traffic. What you need to do is to is be specific and deliver a quality comment.

You should not hesitate in delivering a negative comment if you really think it’s right. Recently, a girl dropped a comment on my guest author’s post and do you know what she said…? Here it is:

Screenshot from 2014-05-31 18:40:03

When I read this comment I was shocked. Not because of that she left a negative comment but it made me realize that there is someone who is reading my blog so carefully.

This was the best moment of my blogging life. I was really bored of comments like ‘Thanks’ and ‘Nice Post’ and I even didn’t care to reply them. This comment made me learn something new. It really feels so  awesome when someone gives his/her precious time through such ultimate comment. It is not a matter of a negative comment but it is about the time and value that your readers are giving you.

P.S. My guest author edited the errors soon after the comment was published.

I have seen many bloggers trying to gain the top position in the comment list of high ranked blog posts as they have the misconception that it would drive them more traffic. If you’re one of them then please leave this practice. It’s our profession and let’s respect it.

Here are tips to do blog commenting, the right way:

  • Don’t spam

If you think that dropping hundreds of comments everyday on various posts will drive you 5000 visitors a day. Then, you’re completely lying up with the bad company. Gone are the days of  comments like “Thanks for sharing” and “nice post“. As I told you earlier these comments are considered as spam nowadays. You need to deliver value to the author’s hardwork. You should sincerely appreciate his efforts.

Your first task should be to read the post carefully then deliver a relevant comment and engage with other readers. This makes people notice you. Try to comment on blogs similar to your niche. This helps you gain authority as people start considering you an expert in a specific niche.

Deliver value through your personal opinions i.e your likes and dislikes.

  • Don’t look fake

Recently, A guy dropped this comment on my old post. This type of comments are either trashed or thrown in the spam section. Who will approve one liner comment with a spelling mistake and without gravatar? Do you?

You must make sure to add the gravatar to your I’d through which you are commenting. Don’t give a fake look.

  • Avoid Keyword Rich Anchor Texts

When you leave a comment you the anchor text would be text typed in the name section. I have seen many bloggers trying to be smart by inserting keyword rich anchor texts within the comment like Moto E Review. These comments are removed at a glance by the author. So don’t try to be smart and play a fair game. If you think that it’s necessary to add then you should add atmost one link and not more than that.

  • Use Genuine Identity

Screenshot from 2014-05-31 18:53:28

Make sure you are leaving the comment with your name. This gives a proof of originality. If you really want to blog like a pro then you must make sure to use an authentic identity. A genuine identity helps you in boosting your web presence.

Make sure you’re using both first name and last name in your comment.

  • Scan the previous comments

Before commenting you must read the previous comments and check whether the value you’re going to deliver isn’t there. If it’s there then you should either edit the comment or leave that place. If you repeat the same value as delivered by someone else then you might lose your image in the industry.

  • Be specific and concise

No need to contribute a paragraph of 1000 words to a post. Just contribute what you you think. Creating a story would be time consuming and of no use. Keep the comment interesting instead of making it long. Ask the author questions in between if you have any. This will enhance the discussion on the topic.Try to engage with other readers too. Here is a comment left by “Robb Gorringe” which made me reply him with interest.

Few sentences like .. “Hmm.. Come to think of it” , “This Post really got me thinking ”  etc makes you get good click throughs as these makes the comment interesting.

Final Words

Blog commenting is a perfect way to boost your blog presence and gain authority in your niche only if you are doing blog commenting the right way and not adopting spammy practices. These basic tips given above would help you in building a good reputation in your community.

I would also advise you not to ignore blog commenting as it could drive good quality traffic to your blog depending on the value you delivered as a comment. Blog commenting can be time consuming. I know! But… still we shouldn’t ignore it. We should sincerely appreciate the author’s hardwork so we get it back on ours.  Am I right?

  • Nice Post 😛
Seriously. I should actually say that you stole my idea.. 😛
Blog commenting is one of the most important aspects of blogging. But alas! many of the bloggers who comment on other blogs do either to get backlinks or traffic. They don’t care whether they’re doing it the right way or not. I get a number of comments on my blog posts like the ones you mentioned – ‘nice post’, ‘very helpful’ and the only thing I do with those comments is to move them in the spam. Even the comments with more than one link (that too unrelated to my post’s topic) go into spam.
So, before a person comments on a blog post, he must make sure to add some value to the post or if he just wants to say thanks – he must tell what made him do that. Otherwise, there’s no use of blog commenting. You would either end up in spam or get almost no traffic.
P.S. I was a bit worried when I left that comment on that post but I must appreciate the way you took it 🙂 It shows how mature you have become in this profession. Good work Nikhil 🙂

    • Hello Manpreet,
Comments like “Thanks” and “Nice Post” deserves to be in spam folder. I am glad that you liked my tips.

Your comment was a boon for me. I had never got that type of comment before.

Thanks for the appreciation Manpreet 🙂

  • Manpreet’s comment is actually an entire article within an article. just like Inception. Her comments make you realize that somewhere and someone in the world is actually reading your content.

    • Hello Raunak,

Firstly, I would like to warmly welcome you to my blog.

I agree with your words that Manpreet’s comments make us realize that someone is actually reading our content. It feels so good! It’s an honour to our hardwork.

Thanks Raunak and Manpreet for your views and comments. Truly appreciate it 🙂

    • Thanks Raunak.
      I haven’t watched inception but still, 😛 🙂

  • Hi Nikhil,
There is definitely the right way to do commenting. A lot of bloggers never get to understand this.

Leaving a one-line comment is never my thing. I have received powerful engagements from many comments I shared.

These comments offer add value. I could be a question, an observation, an opinion , or even a commendation.

The main fact remains that VALUABLE comments attract solid engagement. Every blogger should learn this.

Yes, blog commenting is not about sharing links and inserting keywords!

    • Hello Sunday,

Yes I truly agree with your point that one liner comments are of no use. We should deliver quality to the authors and sincerely appreciate their efforts.

Thanks for your views and comments 🙂

  • Thanks for sharing Nikhil.

    Sorry, I couldnt resist 😀

Wait for it.. There is more..

Indeed well written Nikhil.. Comments do act as a mirror to our content.. And well written negative comments (like the one you embedded in the post) can act as a reality check too..

I am glad that you accepted the honest feedback positively.. It shows your commitment towards blogging.

    • Hello Preeti,

I am truly glad that you liked my honest commitment as after-all blogging survives on the basis of honesty and good relationships. Isn’t it?

Comments like ” Nice Post” and “Thanks” made me to share this article with my readers.

Thanks for your views Preeti 🙂

  • Great article and maximum number of people who do comments with few word they only do for backlinks

    • Hello Sonesh,

Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback 🙂

  • Hi there!

I agree with your tips here, especially about using a genuine identity. My take is that Matt Cutt has multiple tips and guide that would be helpful to use. All of them are informative and very useful in blog commenting. He can help us improve our line of attacks on comments and our voice to sound engageable if we want to build a relationship and open other peoples opinion.

I found this post shared on Kingged.com, the Internet marketing social bookmarking and networking site, and I “kingged” it and left this comment.

    • Hello Metz,

Yeah genuine identity is a must for every blogger to get his/her comment approved and drive good traffic from the comment.

Glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback 🙂

  • Hi Nikhil,

Glad to see your post… You write a good post but in whole post I think Manpreet post one small article insight the comment box. I know the one other lady named Harleena singh. She also do the same I learn a lot from her. 🙂

  • Blog commenting has been one of the easiest ways to gain blogging benefits aside from driving more traffic and backlinks back to your site. However, it is always the quality that matters.

So, these tips would really be a big help for every blogger. It is important to learn blog commenting on the right way.

As what I’ve learned here, you should not spam and fake comments and you should avoid keyword rich anchor texts.

You should only give true and valuable comments in each post you visit, you should be specific and concise, and most importantly, you should use your real identity to give a proof of originality.

I’ve indeed learned a lot from this article. Thanks for the post! 🙂

By the way, I found this post shared on Kingged.com

  • I was always annoyed when people wrote nice post, good post which as we all know is only that we go back and comment on their posts.. Thanks for putting this up.. very informative.. 🙂

    • Hello Natasha,

First of all I would like to warmly welcome you to UBT. Truly glad that you liked my post.

Thanks for your views and comment 🙂

  • May be one year ago, when I just learn something about SEO from one of my elder brother, He told me that, You just need backlink from blog comments. It only helps to get the benefits of SEO as well as Keywords Ranking. He also suggest me that only comments on those blogs who provides a dofollow link. You don’t need to leave a valuable comment, comments are just a formality to get a backlink.

A few days ago, I read some great post about blog commenting and start blog commenting according to their advice and suggestion.

Now more than 80% of my comments are getting approved and get replies to more than 50% comments when in the past, only 20-30 comments get approved and there was no reply.

As well as, a valuable comment also helps to drive huge traffic to my blog.

Thanks Nikhil for the great stuff and proper analysis.

    • Hello Fakharuddin,

Glad that 80% of your comments are getting approved. Just keep delivering quality comments and I’m sure that you’ll be building high quality backlinks from blog commenting very soon.

      Keep it up buddy (y)

Thanks for your views and comments 🙂

  • Hi Nikhil,
This is really an eye opener to the blog commenters!
since there are many who comment just to get some backlink to their blogs.
But the constructive one the lady posted on your post made you to think on
a positive note and that made you to create yet another post on the same subject
Yes, I too had an experience with a blogger in my regional language blog, ones I posted a comment on one of my blog friends page with bit sarcastic way, that created a big chaos and he retaliated with lot of abusive language and I cleared it in a polite way the reason in which I posted that joke and finally he understood my stand in which I posted such a comment, and he openly said sorry for the slip.
In our posts, sometimes we may get negative comments but we should take it very calmly and think on it from the other side and attend it properly as Nikhil did with his lady commenter.
Hey, Nikhil, this post made my day.
    Thank you for sharing this
    Keep up the good work.
    Keep informed
    ~ Philip
Hey Nikhil, I found this post at kingged.com and I kingged it and posted this comment there.

    • Hello Sir,
I am really glad that you liked my post. Our readers have the right to deliver their true feedback instead of commenting just “Thanks” and “Nice Post” .

I always try to be polite with my readers as the negative comments makes me realize that there is someone who is reading my post by heart. He/She has the complete right to say what he/she feels about it. It makes us correct our mistakes and improve.

Really, this comment was a boon for my blog. This motivated me and I felt like delivering more quality posts and make my visitors happy and returning.

      Thanks for appreciating my work.
