Today, I am going to share 8 tips that I follow to rank my blog pages for multiple keywords and believe me, I have experienced a 190% increase in my conversions of my websites.

I know you might be having many questions about how to do keyword research, where to put my keywords, what are LSI keywords and how to add LSI keywords in my post, what should be the keyword density, how many keywords should I use per page etc. You need not worry, I will cover that all either in this post or in my up-coming posts.
So, let’s begin with 10 Tips on how to optimize your website for multiple keywords.
1. Use your secondary keywords in meta description
This might look like a crap technique but it has really worked for me. When I complete my keyword research, I categorize the keywords in 3 types: Primary, Secondary and LSI keywords.
I prefer using the Primary keyword in URL with a keyword density of less than 1% in content. I always prefer using my secondary keywords in my meta description and at last, I sprinkle LSI keywords all over my content.
(If you’re not familiar with LSI keywords and Keyword density, I am going to explain it in the next point).
Using the same primary keyword in the meta description looks like we are stuffing keywords everywhere while using secondary keywords in meta description increases click-through rates and ranks your page for that keyword as well.
As you can see from the above screenshot, Wordstream has a primary keyword: Keyword Optimization, while secondary keywords are SEO Keyword Optimization, PPC Keyword Optimization, and Social Media Keyword Optimization.
In this way, you can also use your primary keyword in your title and secondary keywords in your meta description.
2. Use LSI Keywords
LSI Keywords: Latent Semantic Indexing keywords.
LSI are the keywords related to your primary and secondary keywords. LSI keywords came into force due to increase in web spam due to keyword stuffing. What worked in 2012, doesn’t work now. Bloggers use to stuff their content with their primary keywords in bold and italics and they ranked on the top for their primary keywords.
But things have changed a lot now. Google has got much smarter and made sure to rank the most relevant pages related to the queries.
Let’s say you search for ‘Best Picture Resizer but you also get search results with ‘Photo’ word in it.
How Google related Picture with Photo is the power of LSI keywords. LSI keywords are simply related to your main keyword.
For example. If you want to write a post on ‘Bluehost Coupon’, you can also use other keywords in your post like Web Hosting Discount, Hosting coupon codes, etc.
Now, you might be thinking, how to find LSI keywords and how to add LSI keywords in posts!
Finding LSI keywords is a very simple task. Just Google your main keyword and scroll down to get a number of LSI keywords. Once, you click on the keyword, you will get more suggestions on the next page. This is the easiest way to find LSI keywords.
How to use LSI keywords in your posts?
I really don’t have any special tips for it. Just sprinkle them naturally over your content.
3. Write long content
WOAH… the favorite of Google. Google loves long content, but the problem is that we hate writing long content.
But actually, long doesn’t mean 8000+ words guide. 1000-1500 words is the optimum word limit that will help you rank for multiple keywords in Google search results. If you want to write long guides, that would be really awesome but normal posts are good with 1000-1500 word limit.
I think if you’re really interested in the topic on which you’re writing, 1000-1500 words are nothing. You won’t feel like stopping once you start writing! 🙂
The above screenshot shows the average content length and their rankings in Google search results which prove that lengthy content ranks higher in Google search results.
The use of Long tail keywords by users is increasing day by day. So, it has been proved that detailed in-depth content gets higher rankings and social media advantage over short content. BuzzSumo analyzed 100 Million articles and reached to a conclusion that in-depth content has driven the maximum social shares.
4. Use your keywords in Image title and Alt text
I know we try to often ignore it! 🙂
But you should know that these could help in optimizing your page for multiple keywords.
I use my primary keyword in at least one of the images title and LSI keywords in Alt tags. You need to make sure that you don’t use primary keywords in all of your images title tags. I have experienced low rankings due to that.
Also use your secondary keywords in keywords title and use different LSI keywords in your images ALT tags and make sure they’re relevant by being related to the image.
5. Build links with diversified anchors
This is a must for your site’s long-term health as well. When you manually build backlinks, make sure you diversify your anchor texts.
Here are some commonly used type of anchor texts:
- Exact Match: The anchor texts with your primary keyword.
- Partially Match: Anchor texts with your Secondary keywords.
- Branded: Anchor texts with your brand name.
- LSI Keywords: Anchors texts with your LSI keywords.
- Generic Keywords: Not directly related to any of your keywords. E.g. Click Here, This post etc.
- Naked URL: Just the hyperlinked version of your URL. E.g. https://www.universalbloggingtips.com/search-long-tail-keywords-posts/
Here’s how I diversify my anchor texts for outbound links:
10% for exact match keywords, 30% for long tail keywords, 20% for Naked URL, 15% for Generic keywords, 15% for Generic keywords and 10% branded anchor texts.
But there is no hard and fast rule that you have to follow this only. Approximate figures will also work.
6. Interlink with diversified anchors
Ah… Interlinking is one of the best strategies to rank your pages for multiple keywords.
I generally prefer using Long-tail keywords or phrases as my anchor texts for interlinking. Using your primary keyword as your anchor texts might look spam. You should use less than 10% of keyword rich anchor texts to make it look natural.
And the worst mistake that most of the bloggers make is that they interlink all the posts at one time. I did it too and soon my rankings dropped.
We should always interlink a post gradually with diversified anchor texts and soon you will experience higher rankings for multiple keywords.
7. Target low competition keywords
Please don’t tell this strategy to anyone. I use Long tail keywords with 10 search volume to rank for short tail keywords. Learn how.I never knew that I will see good conversions by targeting keywords with just 10 search volume. I use SEMrush and Google keyword planner to search for those keywords. Now, as Google keyword planner doesn’t show the exact search volume and shows the range instead, I prefer to rely solely on SEMrush.
Let’s say you want to rank for a keyword ‘Best Treadmills for home use’.
Search the same keyword in Google and pick out any of the top 5 search results.
Copy the link URL and plug it into SEMrush. Hit the ‘View full report’ button and filter the volume from lowest to highest by clicking on the volume tab as shown in the below screenshot.
Here you will find several keywords that you can target as secondary or LSI keywords for your blog posts to rank them for multiple keywords.
8. Keyword Density
Honestly, I don’t use any special tool to check keyword density but I make sure that my primary keyword doesn’t exceed 1% of the total words.
And I really don’t care about using LSI keywords in my posts. I just sprinkle them naturally and they really work well.
