There is a simple method to learn how competitive a keyword really is on Google.com – that I have learned a long time ago. Of course, you can use a lot of keyword tools today that can help learn more about a keyword. But this is a good simple, old school way you can learn to use, if you don’t want to invest in tools. haha
I mean, you don’t need to know so much about a keyword. You just need to learn simple things that can help you keep the entire process simple, so you it’ll become a lot easier to be very consistent with everything you need to do. That’s how I look at it.
Let me show you what I do to find good long tail keywords to use on my blog posts and content for my blogs.
Let me use the keyword “search engine optimization tips for bloggers” – for an example.
Here is what I would do to see how much competition this keyword has on Google.com.
Go to Google.com – Start typing what keyword you would like to use, and make sure you find a keyword from the Search Inquiries Suggestions.
Google is giving you search suggestions because a lot of other people have typed that in there too. So, this means that long tail keyword get a little bit of traffic. Otherwise, Google would not suggest it to you. 😉
Next, put the keyword in quotes. We want to find out exactly how many searches there are for this exact keyword.
Now, it is time to find out exactly how many site have this keyword in the URL, in an Anchor Text, and in the Title.
Here is how you find out how many sites are using this keyword in the URL.
Here is how you find out how many sites are using this keyword in an Anchor Text.
Here is how you find out how many sites are using this keyword in the Title.
You can find out a lot about a keyword by doing this. And honestly, this is enough information for you to learn the competition of a keyword and if it would be wise to use it or not. The lower the Results Numbers, the better.
There are no specific numbers you should be looking for. Just learn what will work for you with trial and error. Eventually, you will find out what result numbers work best for you.
There is nothing more you need to learn, to pick good keywords to rank for, really. But, of course, you could learn more, and it could really help you more – but if you are going to learn more, just to get lost in all of the information and get information overload, then keeping it simple is the smarter choice for you. 😉
Keeping simple also works! .. you just need to do it right, and take a lot of action with the simple information.
Do a simple keyword research and once you have chosen the keyword you want to use – it is time to create a search engine optimized blog post.
Follow the simple On-Page SEO information:
– Use your keyword in the headings – H1, H2 and H3.
– Use your keyword in the Title.
– Use your keyword in the first sentence and in the last sentence of your article.
– Make sure your keyword is in the URL.
– Make sure you Underline, Bold and Italicize your keyword.
– Make 1 to 3 of your keywords in the article – click-able/hyperlinked.
– Use your keyword in Alt Tags – you need to upload an image on your post and put your keyword in the ALT Description of the image.
– Make sure your keyword is in the Meta Tags Title and Description.
If you can’t follow every single on-page search engine optimization from the list above, on your blog post, do not stress so much about it. Of course, it would be better to follow everything.
Just don’t try too too hard. You also need to keep the reader in mind at all times, never forget that. If you think too much about the keyword, you might forget about the reader, and you might end up over using the keywords. I don’t think that would sound like quality, valuable content. Just saying….
