Most website owners, bloggers, and small business owners recognize the pow businesses and influence of social media. Those who are looking to get more traffic or make more money (and who isn’t?) often turn to social media because it seems to be the “in” thing that everyone should be doing today to market their website.
Learn how social media can benefit small businesses
One of the challenges of social media marketing is using it efficiently and not letting it consume all of your time. For those who run their own website or business and have responsibilities in all aspects of the business, social media marketing is just one of many things fighting for time an attention. In order to get the most out of it, you’ll need to use social media efficiently and get results while still leaving plenty of time for everything else that needs your attention.
It’s not just large businesses with a full-time marketing staff that can have an impact with social media. Here are some tips that can help you to get more out of social media with a limited amount of time invested.
1. Have a Clear Purpose
Probably the most common pitfall for small businesses and bloggers when it comes to social media is the lack of a clear purpose. I’ve come across many people over the years who are using social media because they feel they have to, or because it’s what everyone else is doing, but they don’t have a clear purpose or even a specific idea of what they want to get out of it.
Just having profiles at various social media sites and sharing links to your own content is not going to get you very far. Think about specifically what you hope to get out of the time and effort that you are investing into social media. Do you want to make more sales? Do you want to increase the size of your email list? Do you want to increase traffic to your site? Do you want to improve brand recognition among your target audience? Do you want to use social media to provide customer support?
Having a clear purpose is an important first step because it should influence and guide other decisions that you make along the way.
2. Prioritize Certain Networks/Sites
There are so many social networking sites out there that you can’t possibly have an active presence at all of them, especially if you’re dealing with a limited amount of time. Most businesses and bloggers will want to have profiles on the major networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. In most industries, there are also some other networking sites that are very popular with the particular target audience that you are trying to reach. It could be Pinterest, or a much smaller social network that has a very tight focus on your particular target market. Generally, you’ll want to have an active presence at the sites that are the most popular with your audience.
When you’re working with limited time you don’t need to try and be active at tons of different social networks. Pick the ones that are the most important for reaching your audience and prioritize them. Use the available time that you have to interact at these networks and you’ll have more of an impact than if you were to spread yourself too thin.
3. Identify Influencers
One of the keys to having success with social media marketing is to be able to interact with influential people in the industry, and (hopefully) to get them to share a link to your content with their followers. These are people that you want to follow yourself, and start interacting with them if you have not already. You can reply to them, retweet, share their links, comment on their pages/profiles, and even comment on their blog posts.
Make an effort to get to know these influential people and help them in whatever way that you can (like promoting their content to your followers). Hopefully they’ll take notice and you’ll get to build a stronger connection or relationship with them.
One approach to getting some help from influencers is to publish egobait posts on your blog that will mention and flatter them. You can then email them and let them know that they have been mentioned in your post, and hopefully they will share it through their social profiles, which can lead to a lot of exposure and some links to your content.
4. Make Use of Available Tools
Tools like Hootsuite can make your efforts much more efficient and allow you to get more impact with a limited amount of time. You can monitor conversations across multiple social networks, publish to your social networks, schedule tweets and posts for the future, and more. Managing all of your social profiles manually through each site without the assistance of some sort of software or tool will take much more of your time, and will leave you without some valuable insight.
5. Stay Active
One of the common pitfalls for many bloggers and businesses with social media is a lack of commitment. In order to have real success you will need to invest time and effort into growing your social media presence on an on-going basis. You don’t need to spend hours every day, but you do need to be active regularly. For most bloggers, I would recommend 30 – 60 minutes per day of activity with social media, because making the right connections can help you to grow your blog much faster.
