SEO is not so easy and not that hard, but sometimes it becomes a tedious task even for professional SEO experts. Nobody knows what trick giant Google is playing with us. Sometimes our SEO strategies work out very well while sometimes they fail. When I was new to SEO, I had many incorrect notations in mind that I am going to mention below.
This post is especially for newbies as I want to make them rid of common SEO misconceptions that they might be having in their mind like I had. Below are 5 SEO misconceptions that most new SEO’s have and you might be having them too!
1. “My site is doing great! I ranked my page at #1? ”
Ranked #1? That’s really great. But for what keyword? Is it searched by your niche audience? Did you make a proper keyword research before writing your post? Ranks are completely useless unless they are tied to a meaningful keyword.
- Do a proper keyword research before writing your posts
- Define your audience on the various traits – Age, Interests, Countries etc.
- Make use of tools like Google keyword planner, SEMrush for keyword research.
2. “I will just promote my homepage to boost my rankings up”
SEO is not just about your site, it’s about every single page that you have on your website. Building links or promoting just your homepage will not boost your ranks up rather it will drown. Building links and promoting your internal pages improves your rankings gradually of your pages.
If SEO is approached as a page-by-page endeavor then you will be on a surer path to success.
- Link to your old pages from fresh pages ( Don’t just roll back and start shooting out links, do it slowly).
- Keep updating your old posts ( Google loves fresh content )
- Be active on social media, keep sharing your individual pages on social media.
- Use Revive Old Post for automatic sharing on social networks
- Show related posts on your blog
- Interlink your pages while responding to your commentators

3. “I have to get more sites to link to mine so that ranks could improve”
If the only reason that you need more links to your site so that Google ranks you higher, you are missing out a real picture. Gone are the days, when buying links worked. Just buy a gig worth $5 that delivers thousands of spammy links to improve rankings in the search results. If you wish to try out this technique, better stay ready to get penalized by giant Google.
Google considers the quality of links rather than quantity. I have been ranking some of my pages for highly competitive keyword and even competing with top sites like RetailMeNot by just building 0 or 1-2 links to that page. Isn’t it amazing?
- Focus on building quality links to your website.
- Never buy links.
- Avoid getting sitewide links.
- Use Topsy to search for your niche related blogs, forums etc to build backlinks.
4. I filled my Meta Keywords Tag, I am ready to go!
This behavior completely shows that you are writing for search engines, not for humans. Your main purpose is to get higher rankings in the Google search results by spamming your content and meta tags with keywords.
But.. listen, boy, Meta Keywords Tag don’t work actually. To make the web a better place, Google has disabled the use of meta keyword tags.
- Rather than just writing for search engines, better try to write for humans too.
- Target keywords but don’t spam.
- Also, target keywords using Latent Semantic Indexing method (LSI) and sprinkle them in your post and make sure they look natural.
5. My site is getting ton of traffic and it’s getting popular, we’re a shoo-in for top rankings
That’s not the right way to get top rankings in search results. You might have heard of bounce rate, right? If not, here is a brief description:

Bounce rate (sometimes confused with exit rate) is an Internet marketing term used in web traffic analysis. It represents the percentage of visitors who enter the site and then leave (“bounce”) rather than continuing on to view other pages within the same site.
Getting traffic is not a big deal, but driving targeted traffic sometimes becomes a big deal. Many e-businesses fail for not reaching their targeted customers. If you are having a micro-niche blog, say on “Dieting for busy moms” and you are not actually able to reach those busy moms who are looking for dieting tips, your website is going to fail in a couple of weeks or say months.
If your website is ranking for terms that generally are college students who are searching for dieting tips, they are going to bounce back and as Google considers your bounce rate while ranking your pages, so you are going to lose rankings even you have traffic.
- Target keywords according to targeted audience, check what queries they keep looking for.
- Join communities where you can find your audience, not just focus on driving traffic from anywhere.
If you were still having the above-mentioned SEO misconceptions, then I must say that get rid of them right away!
Focus on driving targeted traffic to your blog. Don’t just focus on writing for search engines. Try writing for your audience. Engage with them and help them and I am sure Google will love it.
